A tech pack is the ID of a garment, so whoever reads it can easily understand the product, how it’s made, and what is needed to make it. That’s why it’s so important to have this document.
Companies that create tech packs create an asset for life by owning their voice and power in the creative and development processes. Creating a tech pack gives clear instructions, guidelines, and a reference point to assess costing, feasibility, and quality standards.

To make a good tech pack, consider:
- VISUALS: Visual representations that show your product from different angles and settings (think closed and open, sleeves up, down, over or under, etc). A tech pack can include illustrations of the product/garment and inspiration for visual reference, but it must consist of technical drawings that will help assist the production processes.
- PRODUCT INFORMATION: Product Information including but not limited to product name, brief description, Style # or SKU, Season, and all relevant information that will help in the development of your product and assist in identifying it quickly.
- BE SPECIFIC: Precise callouts in all your sections don’t leave any loose ends or create confusion. This goes for Bill of Materials, Special Details, POMs & Grading, Artwork, or even sample reviews. The clearer the better, and over-communicating is better than misinterpreting.
It’s important to consider the complexity of the garment and the process of making the product. For example: a tech pack for a jacket made overseas will not be the same as a T-shirt sourced from blanks suppliers that will be printed on a local print shop.

Regardless of the product, it is important to understand a tech pack is THE MOST IMPORTANT document and should be considered an asset since its inception. As your idea evolves from Design to Development, this magic document captures everything that makes it unique.
